Job Description

Position Summary

 

The Industrial Firefighter shall serve as part of an Industrial Fire Brigade. The Firefighter will report directly to their Fire Captain. The Firefighter will respond and assist on all emergencies to include, but not limited to, HazMat, Fire, Rescue (confined space and high angle), Medical, and Oil Spill Response. The Firefighter will be responsible for all duties delegated by the Fire Captain.

 

The Industrial Firefighter will be expected to acquire a working knowledge of all fire equipment used at the site, as well as proper maintenance and inspection of such equipment. This equipment may include, but is not limited to, all apparatus, fire pumps, extinguishers, hydrants, monitors, post indicators, and deluge/sprinkler systems.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

 

Performs firefighting activities including driving fire apparatus, operating pumps and related equipment, laying hose, and performing fire combat, containment and extinguishment tasks

 

Works under the general supervision of a Crew Leader

 

Using excellent customer service skills, establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other employees, officials, and all members of the general public.

 

Performs emergency aid activities for the ill and injured, including basic life support, and providing other assistance as required

 

Must maintain an Emergency Medical Technician license

 

Participates in fire drills, attends classes in firefighting, emergency medical, hazardous materials, technical rescue, safety, and related subjects

 

Operates personal computer, radio and other communication equipment

 

Participates in the inspection of buildings, hydrants, fire protection systems, and other structures/systems in fire prevention programs

 

Maintains fire equipment, apparatus and facilities.  Performs minor repairs to departmental equipment, apparatus and facilities

 

Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire facilities and equipment; cleans and washes walls and floors; cares for grounds around station; makes minor repairs; washes, hangs and dries hose; washes, cleans, polishes, maintains and tests apparatus and fire equipment

 

Assists in developing plans for special assignments such as emergency preparedness, hazardous communications, training programs, firefighting, hazardous materials, technical rescue, safety and emergency aid activities

 

Presents programs to the facility on safety, medical and firefighting/prevention activities

 

Performs salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water and removing debris

 

Required to perform shift work in a rotation of days, evenings and nights including weekends and holidays

 

Operates a motor vehicle to assist in carrying out the business of Rural Metro Fire Department Industrial and the facility

 

Attendance at work is an essential function of this position

 

 

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

May assist to coordinate, instruct, or supervise the work of new recruits or other facility personnel as assigned.

 

Assists in supervisory and administrative activities as assigned

 

Assists in training new employees as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is subject to the Industrial Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy, as well as the facilities Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy, which includes: pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, random testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return to duty testing and follow-up testing

 

Must have a valid High School Diploma or GED equivalent

 

Must be 21 at the time of hire

 

Must possess a valid driver’s license

 

Must have a working knowledge of driver safety

 

Must possess Illinois Firefighter

 

Must possess Illinois EMT Basic

 

A working knowledge of first aid & CPR preferred

 

Must have the ability to learn the operation of fire suppression and other emergency equipment

 

Must have the ability to learn and apply standard industrial firefighting, emergency aid, hazardous materials, technical rescue and fire prevention techniques

 

Must have the ability to perform strenuous or peak physical effort during emergency, training or station maintenance activities for prolonged periods of time under conditions of extreme heights, confined spaces, intense heat, cold or smoke

Must have the ability to act effectively in emergency and stressful situations

 

Must have the ability to follow verbal and written instructions

 

Must have the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing

 

Must have the ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the general public

 

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:

 

Emergency medical aid equipment, extrication equipment, fire apparatus, fire pumps, hoses and other standard firefighting equipment, ladders, radio, pager , Personal Protective equipment, Self-contained breathing apparatus, personal computer and phone.

 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms.  The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk, hear, taste or smell.

 

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds and drag up to 250 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

 

The employee is required to perform shift work in a rotation of days, evenings and nights, including weekends and holidays.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

 

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job

 

While performing the duties of this job the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions.  The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk or electrical shock and vibration

 

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, except during certain firefighting or EMT activities when noise levels may be loud
