    Job Summary:

    Under limited supervision leads a crew of assigned Airport FireFighters in controlling and extinguishing fires; rescuing persons endangered by aircraft crash or fire, or by structural fire; preventing fire by reducing or eliminating potential fire hazards; responding to and providing advanced life support (ALS) assistance for medical aid calls, vehicle accidents, and Hazmat incidents.  Performs the function of on-scene commander in the absence of the Airport Fire Captain.  This job description applies to both full-time and part-time employees.

     

    Essential Functions:

    Fire Suppression:

    • Directs the response of a crew to a variety of emergency situations: directing agent streams; gaining forcible entry into aircraft and structures, raising and climbing ladders; and using chemical extinguishers, bars, hooks, lines, and other equipment in performing firefighting and rescue duties.
    • Leads a crew in rescue and extraction operations including searching burning aircraft and structures for trapped and/or unconscious victims.
    • Directs the response of a crew to a variety of aircraft related emergencies including, crash of military and civil aircraft, stand-by for inflight emergencies, fuel spills, special maintenance, weapons loading, and aircraft welding.
    • Supervises the response to a variety of Hazardous Materials Emergencies, including fuel spills, and other releases of Hazardous Materials in accordance with airport/customer’s Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasures Plan, state and local protocols and NFPA standards.
    • Inspects facilities to gain compliance with fire prevention regulations and NFPA codes, and to become familiar with the building contents, and the surrounding area.

     

    Emergency Medical Services:

    • Performs emergency medical services commensurate with their EMS certification in airport, public roadway, and office settings and treats patients, in accordance with established Emergency Medical Service Protocols and Rural/Metro Fire Department policy.  
    • Supervises the response of crews to a variety of medical emergencies, including personal injury accidents, accidents with machinery, and motor vehicle accidents; administers cardiopulmonary resuscitation, automated external defibrillation, and uses other medical equipment and procedures in providing emergency medical services in accordance with national standards and local protocols.

     

    Maintenance:

    • Conduct daily and weekly vehicle and equipment inspections as assigned. 
    • Ensure all vehicle and equipment discrepancies are documented and reported to the on-duty Fire Captain.
    • Supervises general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire station including cleaning, washing, painting walls and floors; washing and reloading fire equipment; cleaning and maintaining fire apparatus.

     

    Supervisory:

    • In the absence of/or by direction of the Fire Captain manages personnel and station activities by assigning activities, preparing and providing training classes for station personnel, assists firefighters with career development opportunities.
    • Ensures all station, corporate policies are followed and enforced.
    • Corrects subordinate’s disciplinary problems in accordance with Rural Metro policies and procedures.

     

    Administrative:

    • Completes/Provides detailed written fire/EMS reports and fire station records as required.

     Must have thorough knowledge of Fire SOG’s and administrative policies. 

    • Must have thorough knowledge of applicable collective bargaining agreements. 

     

    Training:

    • Participate in all required training sessions, including, but not limited to; live fire drills, performance evaluation drills, ongoing skills maintenance, practice and training, annual OSHA drills, EMS major skills and any other mandatory Company training.
    • Participates in and conducts group and individual training and drill sessions relating to firefighting, emergency medical services, rescue, and related topic areas.
    • Participates in the on-going technical and practical training within the airport as required.
    • Participates in continuous professional development throughout their role to ensure that skills are current, relevant, and valid.

     

    Customer Service:

    • Provides cooperative/supportive interaction with co-workers, supervisors, airport staff, local fire and EMS departments, and other state, local and federal agencies.
    • Participates and supervises the Fire Department Public Education program by promoting fire safety through tours of the station, safety briefings, extinguisher classes and informational flyers.

     

    Communications:

    • Operates and inspects communications equipment.
    • Conducts all radio communications in a professional, respectful manner and in accordance with airport and FAA policies.
    • Prepares written documents for internal and external audiences.

     

    Compliance:

    • Reviews paperwork for accuracy and correct process.
    • Must participate in scheduled and unscheduled onsite compliance audits.
    • Implements corrective/preventive measures as determined by the Corporate Compliance/Audit Committee.
    • Cooperates with Internal Audit, Compliance and HR on any recommendations and changes to compliance and legal workflow issues.
    • Takes swift and immediate action in accordance with Internal Audit and Corporate Compliance on any areas of concern.
    • Complies and enforces all policies and procedures.
    • Must successfully complete all required Compliance Training within the required time period.
    • Must have no compliance related corrective action during the current review period.

     

    Additional Duties:

    • Perform other duties as directed or assigned that are specific to the local operation. 

     

    Qualifications:

    • Valid driver license with acceptable driving record in accordance with Rural/Metro policy. DUI within last 5 years is disqualifying.
    • Must be able to work any shift assigned, including nights, holidays and weekends to include scheduled and unscheduled overtime and as needed on an emergency basis.
    • Must pass airfield/customer driving test; and obtain/maintain Ramp, Apron, and Airfield driving clearances as required.
    • Must pass FBI fingerprint-based criminal history records check to obtain/maintain an airport/customer security badge.
    • Must meet local standards pertaining to qualifications, training and/or eligibility for promotion or placement.

     

    Certifications:

    The following certifications are required as a condition of employment and maintained for continuous employment:

    • Must be certified as an EMT-Basic or higher (State or National Registry issued);
    • Must be certified as an NFPA 1001, Firefighter II (State, IFSAC, or Pro-Board issued);
    • Must be certified as NFPA 472, Hazardous Materials-Operations-Level (State, IFSAC or Pro-Board issued).
    • Must be certified as an NFPA 1003, Airport Firefighter (State, IFSAC, Pro-Board issued) or FAA 40-hour approved course.
    • Must be certified as an NFPA 1021, Fire Officer (State, IFSAC or Pro-Board issued).

     

    Education Requirements:

    • Must be a high school graduate or possess a GED certificate.
    • Must complete NIMS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, 800 within 30 days of hire date.

    • While performing the duties of this job, fire department personnel are frequently required to walk, sit, climb, crawl, kneel, bend, stoop, lift, talk, see, hear, feel, use clear speech and operate machinery.   There is a need to reach and perform moderate (20-50 pounds) and frequent heavy (50-200 pounds) lifting during the use of tools and equipment, and while assisting others while extinguishing fires or treating ill/injured persons.

    Equipment Operated:

    • Office: Computers, printers, standard Microsoft Windows and Office software, fire/ems incident reporting system(s), etc.
    • Firefighting: Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), personal protective equipment, ladders, portapower units, hammers, chain saws, portable light, etc.
    • EMS: Automatic defibrillators, Sphygmomanometer, pulse oximetry, angiocaheters, stethoscopes, glucometers, backboards, etc.
